The Piastri helmet design
Piastri arrived in Formula 1 in 2023 with the fluorescent colours of his title-winning Formula 2 season. He had explained in 2021 that he had kept bright yellow for years, and that the Australian flag only joined the design in 2019. Both have stayed: the flag frames each side of the shell, the number 81 sits on the top and his logo closes the design at the rear.
His season helmets are credited to MDM Designs and BS Designs, and the 2025 version is described as a red, blue and yellow scheme with a sharper finish than before — the same three elements, arranged with more edge for a title campaign. Compared with his team-mate’s single-colour base, Piastri’s shell is built from blocks and lines, so the number and the flag remain legible from across a room.
The Grand Prix specials work differently. For his home race in Melbourne in 2025 the shell switched to green and yellow, Australia’s sporting colours, with national symbols drawn into the paint. For a collector, the two current editions sit at the two ends of his design: one national, one in his everyday palette. Shown together they explain the design better than either does alone. Because the number 81 sits on the crown, the shell reads best from slightly above and in front, on a low stand rather than at eye level; the flag on each side means a three-quarter angle shows both marks at once. About Oscar Piastri
Born on 6 April 2001 in Melbourne, Australia, Oscar Piastri won the Formula Renault Eurocup (2019), the Formula 3 Championship (2020) and the Formula 2 Championship (2021) in successive seasons, the first driver to take those three titles back to back. He made his Formula 1 debut with McLaren in 2023 and races with the number 81.
